In her recent show, celebrated journalist and talk show host Katie Couric talked about the health benefits of meditation.
She had invited John Denninger, director of research of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine; Bob Roth, Transcendental Meditation teacher and director of the David Lynch Foundation; and country legend Naomi Judd to discuss the topic with her.
That’s what they said
“We’re recognizing more and more that all the stuff that our brain takes in every minute, every day – all that stuff that makes us so stressed out – we’re recognizing that we can combat that with mind-body techniques.” –– John Denninger, M.D., Ph.D., director of research of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine
“One of my very best friends, Dr. Francis Collins, the director of National Institutes of Health – the man who decoded the human genome – taught me something really important. Only one third of our genes predisposes us to hypertension, stress, all kinds of different diseases. This means that two thirds of how happy and healthy we are is actually up to us and the everyday choices we make!” –– Naomi Judd, country singer
“We used to think that all meditations were the same. Now we’re starting to use the same scientific research for meditation that we do for researching medicines. We’re finding that there are different effects. Transcendental Meditation is effortless transcending. I’ve been teaching it for 20 years, and everyone can learn it. A kid with ADD who couldn’t close his eyes for half a minute loves this practice. We’re hardwired for it. It’s not an acquired skill.” –– Bob Roth, Executive Director of the David Lynch Foundation
