The iconic film director David Lynch once said: “Ideas flow through a conduit. Stress squeezes that conduit.” But since Lynch has been practicing the stress-busting technique of Transcendental Meditation (TM) for more than 40 years, it is no wonder that his creative juices just keep flowing.
The latest testament to this is the collection of spectacular jewelry that Lynch designed for the Brooklyn based eco-friendly jewelry makers Alex and Ani.
The gold and silver tone collection, called Meditating Eye, was inspired by the Twin Peaks director’s Transcendental Meditation practice. It includes bracelets, necklaces and cuffs featuring the seeing eye symbol.
The collection was introduced on Instagram with the following caption:
“Change begins within. Close your eyes and settle deep into stillness – into the field of limitless possibilities within you. Open your eyes and your mind is clear, creative, focused. You see your world through a crystal-clear lens.”
Lynch commented on the collection’s conception as follows: “The Meditating Eye collection was created as a symbol, encouraging every human to access that ocean of pure consciousness within.”
What’s more, all these spectacular pieces are not just eye-candy. 20% of the sales price of each of the item sold is donated to the David Lynch Foundation – a charitable fund David Lynch set up in 2005 to help underserved populations find effective relief to stress through the practice of Transcendental Meditation.
The foundation serves veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, victims of domestic violence, inner-city kids, disadvantaged Native American populations, the homeless and so forth.
On the homepage of the foundation, Lynch explains his motivation of bringing the TM technique to those in need as follows:
“It has given me effortless access to unlimited reserves of energy, creativity and happiness deep within. This level of life is sometimes called “pure consciousness”—it is a treasury. And this level of life is deep within us all.
But I had no idea how powerful and profound this technique could be until I saw firsthand how it was being practiced by young children in inner-city schools, veterans who suffer the living hell of post-traumatic stress disorder and women and girls who are victims of terrible violence.”
