Divorce without a war — thanks to meditation

Janet Bray Attwood is the NY Times bestselling co-author of The Passion Test: Discovering the Effortless Path to Your Life Purpose. In a recent interview to Hadley Finch, she described how the practice of Transcendental Meditation helped her to positively cope with perhaps the biggest of all passion tests – a divorce.

Janet’s ex-husband, Chris Attwood, is now the co-author of her books. They are often travelling together, being both ‘best friends and business partners’. Janet is the godmother to Chris’s two daughters.

How could a divorce end up in such a harmonious re-structuring of life?

“The world is as you are,” explained Janet. “The world will reflect back to you how you are to yourself. Both Chris and I have practiced Transcendental Meditation for many years. That really helped with transition of getting a divorce. We didn’t go to war with each other. We just realized that the relationship, as we knew it, was over. We also knew that it was insane for people who’d fallen in love, who’d said, “I love you forever” and then, just because something goes awry, they decide they can’t see each other again and become mortal enemies. Chris and I found that insane. Here’s someone you loved more than anyone in the world. Just because they didn’t do things your way or you didn’t do it their way, you think you can’t be in each other’s world. We thought, “How sad is that!””
