Martin Scorsese, movie director

Martin Scorsese on transcendental meditation
Martin Scorsese (b. 1942) is a film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, and film historian.

Martin Scorsese on Transcendental Meditation:

“A lot of drama is projected onto the screens of our consciousness and minds, day and night. Patterns, intrigues, resentments, hatreds and terrors.

The most difficult ones, the most wrenching anxieties can be triggered by anything at all. They come upon us and grab hold of us, and we identify them as real because they’re so immediate.

COPING WITH STRESS: Mr. Scorsese, a meditator since 2008, says TM played a pivotal role in the turmoil of filming Hugo, which, he recalls, ran over budget and over time. “I would get up 45 minutes early to meditate before I was able to face that set!” he says. At that point, TM was his only option: “There’s only one thing you can do. Meditate, calm it down, and then, afterwards, deal with the realities.”

And I guess the common response is to tough it out — in other words, to suffer.

I’ve been a firm believer in suffering all my life. Yet I recently learnt that you may not have to suffer through all that much. It may not be the way it’s supposed to be.

For the last few years, I’ve been practicing Transcendental Meditation. It’s difficult to describe the effect it has had on my life. I can only mention may-be a few words: calm, clarity, a balance, and at times — a recognition.

For me, meditation has made a difference.”
